Join the Katie Kares Team Annual Run/Walk for Ovarian Cancer!!

Dear Family,

In recognition of National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and in memory of Aunt Katie and her courageous battle with ovarian cancer, we have launched Katie Kares.

Katie Kares is a website aimed at increased awareness of the signs and dangers of this devastating disease. The site relies simply on word of mouth to accomplish this goal. We will be officially launching the website later today. We would like to have as many family members who can and will, take the pledge before the official launch. The pledge only requires that you agree to talk to others about this silent killer and encourage them to come to the website to do the same.

In addition to launching the site, Katie Kares has also formed a team that will participate in the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition’s (DFW Chapter) 10th Annual Run/Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer. This event is scheduled for Saturday, September 25, 2010 in Grapevine, TX. We would like for as many as possible to participate in the walk as part of Team Katie Kares. The cost is $30 per adult and $22 per child and includes your registration fee, team T-Shirt honoring Aunt Katie, and donation to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC). If you are unable to participate in the walk, you can make a donation to our team that will go to NOCC. Checks should be made payable to Katie Kares and be sent to the following address: Katie Kares; P.O. Box 801823; Dallas, TX 75380. The deadline for the walk is September 13, 2010.

Wonder Momma

Have you ever heard of Wonder Woman? Wonder Woman is a fictional super hero character in comic books and cartoons. Wonder Woman wears a special costume and has special powers. I really like this character because there are not too many things that Wonder Woman can not do. I thank God for giving me my momma. She is not on any cartoons or in any comic books but she is a real life superhero with special powers, a special costume and just like Wonder Woman, she can do anything.

My momma has many very special powers. She always seems to know things that I don't even think she knows. She knows when I don't feel good and she knows when I get in trouble at school. My momma tells me that she can look at me and tell when I have done something wrong. She has super hearing and she has x-ray vision, and sometimes I even think she has eyes in the back of her head. I can not figure out how she knows when to tell me to stop doing something that I should not be doing even when I am in a different room from her. My momma has super magical powers because sometimes I look in the refrigerator for something to eat and I don’t see anything in there, and then before you know it she tells us that dinner is ready. She is always talking about how God is her strength and power.

My momma has a very special costume, and it is called the Armour of God. Her costume has several pieces to it. There is a breastplate of righteousness, a shield of faith, a helmet of salvation and a sword of the spirit. You may notice that this costume does not have any shielding on the back, and that is because we don’t need it. I learned in chapel that we are not ever supposed to run from the devil because God has always got our back. My momma tells me that she wears this everywhere she goes and that I should do the same thing. This very special costume is invisible, but it is there.

I think my momma can do anything. One day my brother and I were playing football, and she stole the ball from us and she scored a touchdown. On another day there was a big snake in our backyard and I don’t know if she was scared of it or not but she was going to kill it. My dad got home just in time to do it, but if he hadn’t I still think she would have gotten it. Most of the time I fall asleep as soon as I get in the car after school, but my momma is going all day. She gets up very early in the morning and goes from working out at the gym to going to work to coming home, cooking dinner, washing dishes and helping with homework. In Philippians chapter 4 verse 13 it says, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me", so that is why I know my momma can do anything.

Wonder Woman is a pretty cool super hero, but my momma is the coolest hero to me. She has all kinds of very special powers, she has a very special costume and she can do anything. Unlike Wonder Woman, my momma is real. I thank God for such a wonderful momma. Even though she is not on cartoons or in comic book she should have a super hero name and that name should be Wonder Momma.

This is the latest of the Association of Texas Professional Educators’ (ATPE) Informative Series e-mails, which are aimed at providing you with the information you need to enhance your career.

The ATPE Foundation*, established in 2000, is dedicated to the advancement of public education and the success of Texas schoolchildren through educator recruitment and retention efforts, literacy initiatives and technology programs. The foundation offers two scholarship programs and awards up to ten scholarships each year.

The Barbara Jordan Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the late Barbara Jordan, a Texas congresswoman and distinguished educator. Up to six $1,500 scholarships will be awarded each year to outstanding junior, senior and graduate students enrolled in educator preparation programs at predominantly ethnic-minority institutions.

The Fred Wiesner Educational Excellence Scholarship was established to honor the late Fred Wiesner, one of ATPE’s founding members. The program awards four $1,500 scholarships to outstanding college students currently enrolled in educator preparation programs. Three scholarships will be awarded to undergraduate college students, and one scholarship will be awarded to a graduate student (if the number and quality of applicants allows).

High school writing contest: Entries in English and Spanish are being accepted for the 25th annual Dallas-Fort Worth Network of Hispanic Communicators' High School Writing Contest. A two-page essay should focus on young voters. Students do not have to be Latino to participate. Essays will be judged in three categories: ninth- and 10th-grade English; 11th- and 12th-grade English; and ninth- through 12th-grade Spanish. Students in grades 9-12 from Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Fannin, Grayson, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant and Wise counties are eligible. Prizes include cash awards. Health care gains start soon — bigger ones later

WASHINGTON – The first changes under the new health care law will be easy to see and not long in coming: There'll be $250 rebate checks for seniors in the Medicare drug coverage gap, and young adults moving from college to work will be able to stay on their parents' plans until they turn 26.

But the peace of mind the president promised — the antidote for health care insecurity, whether you favored or opposed his overhaul — is still a ways beyond the horizon, starting only in 2014. Insurers then will be barred from turning down people with medical problems, and the government will provide tax credits to help millions of working families buy coverage they can't afford now.

Health care overhaul will bring real change, but it's going to happen slowly.

President Barack Obama plans to sign the main legislation Tuesday in the White House East Room after a bitterly divided House approved it Sunday night. That will cap a turbulent, yearlong quest by the president and congressional Democrats to remake the nation's health care system, fully one-sixth of the U.S. economy.

Obama's signature will start the Senate considering a package of changes the House also has approved. But the main overhaul will already be officially on the books.

Still, if Obama wants to actually preside over the expansion of coverage to more than 30 million people, he'll first have to persuade a majority of Americans to re-elect him in 2012.

"For people who have the greatest need, a number of things will start quickly and make a difference," said DeAnn Friedholm of Consumers Union. For others, 2014 may seem like a long way away. "Some people may be frustrated that it's going to be several years, but that is the reality of what it takes to make these significant changes," she added.

The main reason that Obama's plan phases in slowly boils down to cost. The Medicare cuts and tax increases to finance the bill start early; the subsidies to help people purchase coverage come later. That combination keeps the cost of the overhaul under $1 trillion in its first decade, as Obama promised. Republicans call it an accounting gimmick — but in past years they also resorted to it.

Here's a look at some of the major impacts for consumers:

• COMING SOON:

Roughly a third of people in their 20s are uninsured, so allowing young adults to remain on their parents' plans until 26 would be a significant new option for families.

Adult children would not be able to stay on a parental plan if they had access to employer coverage of their own. But they could get married and still be covered. (Grandkids, however, would not qualify.) Regulations will clarify to what degree young adults have to be financially dependent on their parents.

Other reforms starting this year would prevent insurers from canceling the policies of people who get sick, from denying coverage to children with medical problems, and from putting lifetime dollar limits on a policy.

These changes will spread risks more broadly, but they're also likely to nudge insurance premiums somewhat higher.

Obama's plan also includes an important new program for the most vulnerable: uninsured people who can't get coverage because of major medical problems. It's intended to provide an umbrella of protection until the broad expansion of coverage takes effect in 2014.

The government will pump money into high-risk insurance pools in the states, making coverage available for people in frail health who have been uninsured for at least six months. The premiums could still be a stretch, but for people who need continuing medical attention, it could make a dramatic difference.

"For people who have not been able to get anything, who have expensive chronic illnesses or other conditions, it could be a lifesaver," said Friedholm.

There is a catch, however. The $5 billion Obama has allocated for the program is unlikely to last until 2014. In fact, government experts have projected it could run out next year.

Among seniors, the plan will create both winners and losers. On the plus side, it gradually closes the dreaded "doughnut hole" prescription coverage gap, improves preventive care and puts a new emphasis on trying to keep seniors struggling with chronic diseases in better overall health.

But it also cuts funding for popular private insurance plans offered through the Medicare Advantage program. About one-quarter of seniors have signed up for the plans, which generally offer lower out-of-pocket costs. That's been possible because the government pays the plans about 13 percent more than it costs to cover seniors in traditional Medicare. As the payments are scaled back, it could trigger an exodus from Medicare Advantage.

"It's not all black and white; sometimes it's gray," said James Firman, president of the National Council on the Aging. "Overall we think this plan is very good, and will provide some significant benefits for seniors. There will be some pain among some people in Medicare Advantage plans."

The prescription coverage gap will be totally closed in 2020. At that point, seniors will be responsible for 25 percent of the cost of their medications until Medicare's catastrophic coverage kicks in, dropping their copayments to 5 percent.

• COMING LATER:

The real transformation of America's health insurance system won't take place until 2014.

Four breathtaking changes will happen simultaneously:

• Insurers will be required to take all applicants. They won't be able to turn down people in poor health, or charge them more.

• States will set up new insurance supermarkets for small businesses and people buying their own coverage, pooling together to get the kind of purchasing clout government workers have now.

• Most Americans will be required to carry health insurance, either through an employer, a government program or by buying their own. Those who refuse will face fines from the IRS.

• Tax credits to help pay for premiums will start flowing to middle-class working families, and Medicaid will be expanded to cover more low income people. Households making up to four times the poverty level — about $88,000 for a family of four_ will be eligible for assistance. But the most generous aid — including help with copayments and deductibles — will be for those on the lower-to-middle rungs of the income scale.

When all is said and done, the majority of working-age Americans and their families will still have employer-sponsored coverage, as they do now. But the number of uninsured will drop by more than half. Illegal immigrants would account for more than one-third of the remaining 23 million people without coverage.

Cost could be the Achilles' heel of the whole effort.

"I hope it is not repealed, because we do need to extend coverage to most of our population," said Gail Wilensky, who ran Medicare for President George H.W. Bush and remains a leading health care adviser to Republicans. "But it could well be substantially modified. It expands coverage, but it does very little to take on two other major issues: improving quality and leveling the rate of growth in spending."

Major Requirement:

Principal Function:

The organist (pianist)/music assistant is responsible to the minister of music for serving at the organ/piano and assisting in the music ministry.

Responsibilities:

Play the instrument for all regular and special services of the church.
Serve as accompanist for choirs, ensembles, soloists, or instrumentalists in regular and special rehearsals and performances, as needed.
Play for weddings and funerals as requested.
Assist in planning worship services, choir rehearsals and special music events.
Plan and give direction to a training program designed for developing vocal quality as it relates to church music.
Maintain a regular weekly schedule of choir rehearsals.
Serve as the worship leader in the absence of the minister of music.
Work with the Directors of all choirs.
Work with the graded choirs as assigned.
Review, select, and purchase new music appropriate worship in the local congregation.
Perform other duties as necessary.

Saturday, Final run through for Praise Expressions (praise dance, mime, step team) beginning promptly at 11:00 a.m.

Saturday evening at 5:00 is the talent showcase, featuring Andre Lindsay and the Daniel Project...this will be a fun, spirit filled night for the youth...please come out to support and don't forget to invite a guest.
Sunday morning at 9:15, we will serve breakfast before Sunday school...(I need volunteers to assist in the preparation of breakfast)
Sunday evening at 3:00 we go to Mt. Moriah...the YOUTH will be singing. We will be preparing a light dinner for the youth...(I need volunteers for dinner)

We will be driving the bus over to Mt. Moriah...

So, as you can see...this weekend we will be very BUSY...

The shirts will be here on Wednesday, please see Demetra for payment. If you can not pay on Wednesday, please pay no later than Sunday.

The racial slur spray-painted in red on a house under construction in North Arlington is the latest sign that some neighbors may not welcome the homeowners.

Concerns over possible discrimination led police to pass out fliers in the neighborhood Friday, telling residents the couple's home had been repeatedly "targeted due to the race of the owners."

Broderick Gamble and his fiancée, Silk Pettyjohn, the black couple building the home, lived in the house that stood on the same wooded lot for only a few days in 2005 before it burned.

Authorities "said somebody left an iron plugged in," Ms. Pettyjohn said. But she said she can't help wondering.

On Wednesday, Ms. Pettyjohn was struck in the face with a two-by-four by a woman who lives several blocks away, police said. Grace Head, 66, was arrested and charged with assault.

The couple say they were in their front yard when Ms. Head walked up with her Doberman pinscher and told them they could not live in the Timberview addition because they are black.

Ms. Pettyjohn accuses Ms. Head of using profanity and racial slurs.

"She said, 'There is no .... way we're going to let you ... move into this neighborhood,' " Ms. Pettyjohn said.

The couple say Ms. Head picked up a board from the yard and hit Ms. Pettyjohn with it.

Lt. Blake Miller, an Arlington police spokesman, said officers responding to a disturbance call arrested Ms. Head about 6 p.m. on charges of assault with bodily injury, criminal trespass and failure to identify. Ms. Head, who could not be reached for comment, was released from jail early Thursday after posting bond.

Late Friday, Ms. Pettyjohn still had a bruise on the right side of her face from her hairline to her upper lip. She said her tongue was swollen and several teeth were loose. Mr. Gamble said they and their four children probably won't have Christmas this year because of the expected medical expenses.

Mr. Gamble, a contractor, has the new home – a 2,800-square-foot one-story with an exterior of bricks from the old house – looking almost ready to move in. The roof is on, and there is glass in the windows. But hateful words now mar the white garage doors.

On Friday, Mr. Gamble was at work when he got the call about the words.

He rushed home and found "KILL" spray-painted on one garage door and "DIE" and a racial slur on the other.

Ms. Pettyjohn said she thought they should leave the words where they are.

"They put it up there," she said. "Let them take it down."

September 21-22 is our Bi-Annual Women's Retreat at the Embassy Suites Hotel - Park Central, http://esdallasparcental.hotel-brochure.com/. The hotel has recently been renovated and is absolutely gorgeous. We are encouraging all women to make an attempt to stay, however, if you are unable to stay overnight please still come out and support the retreat.
